They Are Legends

As a shoe-connessieur + 90s rap fan, this is an amazing collaboration project. I don’t know how the whole project came about or why?, but the outcome is dope.

I don’t know any Hip-Hop heads who don’t know A Tribe Called Quest. They are one of the most revered rap-group til this day and considered to be Hall-of-Famers. Q-Tip and Phife Dawg’s style of delivery and flow have inspired many of the rappers we all listen to now — Kanye West, Little Brother, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, etc. Along with that, I don’t know anyone period who hasn’t heard of Michael Jordan. The man’s transcended from not only being a basketball legend, but a legend in marketing campaigns the world over. To this day, kids are still in a craze over his shoes. NBA elites will always be compared to, but never equally as great, as he was. Both are truly legendary in their own rights and this collaborative effort is a must-have for fans, though I’m sure kids who don’t really care much about either will be tackling store shelves fast to flip them for insane profits. UGH!

This collection is now available @ LTD.

And while you’re at it, pick up Q-Tip’s latest album “Renaissance Man“. A great album you can listen to during any part of your day — whether as background music at work or something to groove to in traffic.

The Elephant Is Vanishing

Though a fairly new brand, Vanishing Elephant is quickly becoming one of my picks for this year’s favorites. Enlisting the help of Aaron Russell (Maharishi), they’ve created a collection consisting of woven shirts, denim jeans, printed tees, tailored pants, leather jackets, etc. The attention to detail towards each item is conspicuous, yet it’s the unseen functionality of the clothings which takes the front-seat. From detachable hoodies to lightweight fabrics, you’re sure to stay stylish, and comfortable, all season long. Of course with what Russell’s done for the Maharishi brand, you’ expect that kind of craftsmanship.

The guys behind the brand — Felix Chan and Huw Bennett — also run their own BLOG! which looks to become fairly entertaining as the year progresses. I love to see, and read, of other brands’ adventures during their process of doing what they love and sharing that entrepreneurial spirit.

Benjamin Bixby

null

Andre 3000 — one-half of rap duo Outkast — was honored by GQ Magazine as one of 2009’s Best New Designers in America. His line ‘Benjamin Bixby’ made its debut in the latter part of 2008 and has been sold at high-end boutiques internationally and also at Barneys New York department stores. The brand’s collective designs derive from the 1920s and 30s collegiate look with a twist of Andre’s personal style. Sure, only a small number of men can really pull the whole look off authentically, but there are some nice selections that I can agree with if worn seperately.

The Year Of The Crook

Straight from Johnny Cupcake’s bulletin:

Randomly putting baked items on t-shirts and having an entire brand revolve around it is free for anyone to do. I don’t own food. However, I did indeed start this brand of mine 8 years ago, having it’s main focus be revolved around cupcakes and anything associated with it. In the independent t-shirt industry, I believe I was the first person to go all out with this cupcake / baking motif. I’ve made a tremendous amount of sacrifices and risks to make it the homegrown, family run, fun, limited business that it is, since I dropped out of high school and sold my t-shirts out of my rusty car. With my brands main focus on my customers and their experience, I think I’ve been doing a pretty swell job at it.

Last Spring I was alerted by a customer who happened to work at a popular mall sportswear store. This customer of mine caught a glimpse of his manager’s catalog which had various items that were being released in the near future at all of their mall locations. One of the items in this companies catalog was a “Make Pastry Not War” t-shirt. Not only was it a very similar slogan, but it had the same EXACT placement, font, EVEN A CUPCAKE in the center of the t-shirt. This was no coincidence. Weeks later my inbox was flooded with furious Johnny Cupcakes customers who saw this same catalog with the ‘Pastry’ design in it. I could of made a big deal about it online, making everyone else aware of it. Instead, I decided not to be a cry baby and post it all over the internet, so I sought out a different route. I decided to contact my trademark attorney, who then contacted the owners of Pastry / Pastry Kicks. We got in touch with the President of a certain mall chain-store who ended up declining the order of all ‘Make Pastry Not War’ t-shirts.

Recently I’ve received several e-mails from confused and upset customers of mine. Now, 2 other designs have appeared on their website. You be the judge…

The thing that baffles me, is why would two girls who’re famous via MTV, have to stoop so low to create such similar items, never mind brand? Maybe they’re both really great girls who happened to hire some not-so-great designers? I’m not sure what the case is, but I do know that this should be brought to everyone’s attention.

This is just another brand being added to a whole list of other victims being bitten and ripped off this year. Looks to be a busy year for the crooks. I think the most disgusting and most blatant jack-move award goes to Levi’s ripping off Supra, Vans, and Converse. Take a gander for yourself here. Then there’s that whole mess with The Hundreds and American Eagle with these:

Toe Up From The Floor Up

I’ve always loved dressing up for occasions and think every man should own at least one really fine-tailored suit in their closet, a nice collection of ties, and a pair of elegant dress-shoes. I’ve always prided myself in my selection of ties and blazers but I think my shoes need a bit of an upgrade. I’ve worn my Calvin Klein slip-ons for the last year and a half, and I think it’s time to go back to laces. These Lanvin Denim & Leather Richelieu shoes look amazing. I’ve never seen the two fabrics on dress-shoes before and it’s quite a grand duo.

Diamond In The Sky

null

I’ve seen this tee-shirt design for a few years now, and it finally gets a release date. The print looks very intricate and the message behind the imagery is powerful. As always, any release by Diamond is off the shelves before you know it, so this is something you’re going to have to write in your calendars and prepare to sit in front of your computers for hours waiting. The shirt is slated to be released on Thursday, January 15th in their Online Shop @ 12:00PM PST.

Maison Martin Margiela Spring/Summer Collection

I like this new collection from Maison Martin Margiela because each piece flows consistenly well with each other. Something about it gives off a mysterious elegance feel and the attention to detail seems precise. There’s only one thing I’m not quite fond of is that the color schemes remind me more of a cold winter rather than a spring or summer season.
The season’s drop is available now through IT stores in Hong Kong.

We Are The ABCrew

Remember Jin the Emcee? He took over BET for seven-weeks on their ‘Freestyle Friday’ battle segments and was signed to Ruff Ryders soon after. The hype was there but marketing, promotions, pressures from the label-heads, and a forced image made for a shortlived career. I still think he has a lot of talent and potential, but the world wasn’t ready for an Asian rapper. Plus, I honestly didn’t think Ruff Ryders was a good choice since the label became lackluster after DMX and The Lox parted ways. Anyways, since then, Jin has been making his own noise back in the motherland — China. Looks like he’s in the process of releasing a collaborative effort with Subcrew, whose been a staple ‘go-to’ hat manufacturer in the scene for a good while.

Here we have a little teaser of the ABC x Subcrew project, though there hasn’t been any word on the release date as of yet.
